As a rule, games in that series either contain SNK vs. Capcom or even Capcom vs. SNK, a number one company denoting a company behind a stake's publication. Games therein series pop up for various platforms, including a CPS-2 (arcade), Neo-Geo (arcade), PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube, Xbox, Neo Geo Pocket Color, and Sega Dreamcast.

A supposed origin behind this series was an issue of Arcadia magazine in which there were articles covering both ''A King of Fighters '98 & Street Fighter Alpha 3, both of which were freed at about a equivalent period of time. Readers experienced misread a handle, which said KOF vs. SF, to mean that there was the fighting game that would pit characters from either Street Fighter and The King of Fighters.
